About KHC
The Kidney and Hypertension Center (KHC) would like to thank our community for trusting us with their kidney care needs for over 50 years. Our founder, Lionel King, MD, introduced nephrology to the Tristate area in 1963. Under his care, Cincinnati saw the first patient initiated on dialysis and the first patient undergo a kidney transplant in 1964. In 1972, our group was established and began to expand as our founding members recognized the growing need for kidney care in our community. More recently, in 1997, under the leadership of Thomas “Mick” Shaughnessy, MD, our group formally became known as The Kidney and Hypertension Center and entered a period of rapid growth to continue to meet the expanding needs of the community we serve. As we surpassed our 50th anniversary, our group now includes over 30 physicians and 10 nurse practitioners.
Though the names and faces of our group have changed over time, our core values have not. We continue to be here to meet the growing needs of our community. We now see patients at over 20 office locations, provide care within all Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky health systems, operate a transplant center located within The Christ Hospital and have two dialysis access surgical centers as we strive to meet all the needs of our patients. At KHC, we provide you with comprehensive kidney care because we care.
